Description
HOLCOMBE ROGUS ST 02 SE 2/95 Stables approximately 4 metres south of Freathingcott Farmhouse GV II Stables. Probably mid C19. Local stone rubble with larger, more carefully-dressed, quoins and voussoirs; interlocking tile roof, maybe thatch originally. Plan: stable block built down the hillslope and facing into the courtyard to east. The north end is terraced into the hillslope. Haylofts over. Exterior: the taller main block front would be symmetrical except for a hayloft window to left. There is a pair of stable doorways each with a window toward the end, all these with segmental arches over. Central first floor loading hatch (and another into the right (north) gable-end from the terrace). To left of this is a lower block set back very slightly from the main front . It contains 2 round-headed doorways, each with a ventilation slit to right, and at the right end a doorway with hayloft loading hatch directly above. The C19 joinery detail here is mostly well- preserved including the plain mullioned windows with internal shutters. The roof is gable-ended. Interior: has plain but sturdy carpentry detail. These stables with the other listed farmbuildings around the farmyard form an exceptionally good group of traditional farmbuildings serving nearby Freathingcott Farmhouse (q.v). The visual impact of the whole group is enhanced by their setting on a steep hillslope.
