Description
The stables, located approximately 4 metres south of Freathingcott Farmhouse, were likely built in the mid-19th century. Constructed from local stone rubble, they feature larger, more carefully-dressed quoins and voussoirs, topped with an interlocking tile roof, which may have originally been thatch. The stable block is positioned down a hillslope and faces into a courtyard to the east, with the north end terraced into the slope. There are haylofts above.
The exterior of the main block is mostly symmetrical, except for a hayloft window on the left side. It includes a pair of stable doorways, each with a window towards the end, all topped with segmental arches. There is a central first-floor loading hatch and another hatch into the right gable-end from the terrace. To the left, a lower block is set back slightly from the main front and contains two round-headed doorways, each with a ventilation slit to the right, and a doorway at the right end with a hayloft loading hatch directly above. The 19th-century joinery detail is well-preserved, including plain mullioned windows with internal shutters. The roof is gable-ended.
Inside, the stables feature plain but sturdy carpentry details. These stables, along with other listed farm buildings around the farmyard, create an exceptionally good group of traditional farm buildings serving nearby Freathingcott Farmhouse. The visual impact of the entire group is enhanced by their setting on a steep hillslope.
