Description
This chest tomb, located about 10 metres west of the tower of the Church of St. Matthew, dates from around 1831. It is made of Portland Stone ashlar and has a rectangular shape, resting on a chamfered plinth with a hollow-moulded base and a low pitched lid. Each corner features clasping pilasters with recessed panels. The south side of the tomb commemorates John Cross Pitt, who died at the age of 17 in 1831, while the east side records the deaths of John Pitt in 1836 and Thomas Pitt in 1811. The lid also includes memorials to other members of the Pitt family from the later 19th century.
