Description

This chest tomb, located approximately 500 metres south of the Church of St Mary, dates from around 1826 and was created for John Read of Teignmouth. It is made of Portland stone and stands on a podium of brick and granite. The tomb has a rectangular shape with a bead-mould base and a flat lid featuring reeded edges. Each side of the tomb includes a shallow recessed panel framed with a double rebate. The east side commemorates John Read, who died on March 12, 1826, while the south and west sides memorialize his wife, Mary, who died in 1867, and their children. The granite coping of the retaining wall originally included settings for an enclosing iron fence, which has since been removed.
