Description
Benshayes Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins in the 17th century, featuring remodelling from the late 18th to early 19th century. It is constructed from whitewashed rendered stone rubble and has a slate roof, gabled at the right end and at the ends of the wing. The building has a plan in the shape of an "L," consisting of a main range with two rooms and rear service rooms, along with a crosswing on the left end. The main range dates back to the 17th century, but the left room has been remodelled into an unheated entrance hall that includes a late 18th to early 19th-century staircase providing access to the rear service rooms. The crosswing contains a kitchen at the front and a parlour from the late 18th to early 19th century at the rear, with a single-storey lean-to on the left return of the crosswing.
The exterior features two storeys and has an asymmetrical facade with one window on the left and three windows on the right, with the end of the crosswing to the left. There is a 20th-century front door on the left side of the main range, and the windows are primarily 20th-century three-light timber casements with glazing bars, except for an iron casement on the first floor of the crosswing. Inside, 17th-century features can be found in the right-hand room, including one half and one crossbeam with scroll stops, and a large open fireplace with a replaced lintel. The roof space has not been inspected. The farmhouse is part of a good group with the associated farm buildings and granary.
