Description

The barn immediately north of Westbrook is a Grade II listed building, possibly originally a house or service range associated with Westbrook. It is constructed from stone rubble and features a slate roof, which has been replaced with corrugated iron at the rear of the ridge. The barn has a single depth plan with an approximately central internal partition. The well-finished cross beams support the loft, and numerous mullioned windows indicate a higher status origin than that of a typical barn. A bulge in the left end may suggest a former oven, and a half beam at the left end indicates that this wall may have been rebuilt, possibly removing a former stack.

The exterior is two storeys high, with an asymmetrical front elevation forming the fourth side of the rear courtyard of Westbrook. There are three ground floor doorways; the two on the right are likely from the 19th century, while the left-hand doorframe is chamfered and dates to the 17th century. The barn has two ground floor four-light moulded timber mullioned windows and three four-light ovolo-moulded mullioned windows high under the eaves, along with a loft doorway to the left. The rear elevation features a blocked doorway with a chamfered lintel and three 17th century ground floor mullioned windows, one of which is blocked. The right gable end has one ground floor four-light mullioned window.

Inside, there are some chamfered cross beams with step scroll stops. Most of the roof trusses date from after the 17th century, but one, located to the right of the partition, is likely from the 17th century. A more detailed survey could provide further insights into the origins of this building, which is significant to the setting of Westbrook.
