Description
Lower Coombe Cottage is a house that dates from the late 17th century, with modifications made in the mid-19th century and around 1950. The cottage is built of plastered cob on rubble footings, with some repairs using rubble and brick. It features rubble and brick stacks, with chimney shafts added around 1950, and has a thatched roof. The cottage has a two-room layout and faces south, with a projecting front lateral stack for the larger room on the right (east) and an end stack for the left room. There is a service block added to the rear of the left room around 1950.
The building is two storeys high and has irregular window placement, with three ground floor and two first floor windows. All windows are mid-19th century iron-framed casements featuring a cast iron pattern of hexagonal panes with narrow margin panes. The door is located to the left of centre, set behind a 20th-century gabled porch that has a thatched roof and a door on the side, along with a front window made of leaded glass. The right room slightly projects forward. The plaster on the exterior is lightly inscribed to resemble ashlar. The front stack was rebuilt around 1950, and at the same time, the left end wall was also rebuilt. The roof has a gabled section on the left and a hipped section on the right.
Inside, the right room features a chamfered crossbeam with a straight cut stop and an original fireplace, although it is blocked and the outside stack has been rebuilt. The left room has a plain chamfered crossbeam, but the original fireplace was demolished when the end wall was rebuilt. The roof has not been inspected.
