Description
Taw Bridge is a road bridge over the River Taw, built around 1830. It is constructed from coursed blocks of local iron stone with rock-faced ashlar detailing and features a replacement concrete coping. The bridge has vertical abutments supporting a single segmental arch, where some of the ashlar voussoirs are incised to resemble two headers for a uniform appearance. A plain string course slopes slightly towards the center at road level. The parapet is made of ashlar only on the inside edges. At both ends, the walls curve outward to terminal piers that project externally. The design of this bridge is very similar to others in the area, such as Lapford Bridge and Bury Bridge in Morchard Bishop, which have plaques commemorating their construction in 1830 by builder Roger Tyler for the Trustees of the Exeter Turnpike.
