Description
This building is a barn located 30 metres north of Middle Mackham Farmhouse, dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with an extension added around the 18th century. It features flint rubble and cob walls, topped with a corrugated-iron roof that has hipped and half-hipped ends.
The barn is rectangular with four bays, and its higher east end is built into the slope of the land, while the lower west end was extended in the 18th century. It stands at one storey. The north side includes two cart entrances, with the right entrance featuring old plank doors and a rounded flint corner. The half-hipped east end has a cob wall with a loading door, and there is a later stone shed attached at right angles on the south side.
Inside, the barn has three side-pegged jointed cruck trusses with high collars. The east truss contains redundant mortices for an additional pair of collars. The south post of the centre truss has been removed due to the demolition of part of the south wall for access to the adjoining shed. The interior also features two tiers of trenched purlins and a trenched diagonally-set ridgepiece, with some common rafters and battens remaining, as well as some thatch beneath the corrugated-iron roof cladding.
