Description
This building is a former barn located approximately 2 metres south of Paynes Farmhouse. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century and has been somewhat altered in the 20th century. The structure features partly plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with some cob replaced by stone rubble patching, and it has a corrugated iron roof that was originally thatch.
The barn was built down the hillslope facing south and was originally designed with opposing doorways leading onto the threshing floor. However, in the 20th century, it was converted into a cartshed by removing the front (south) wall. The front of the barn is mostly open-fronted and full height, with only the fourth bay at the left (west) end still closed. The divisions between the bays are formed by jointed cruck posts of the roof trusses, although the post to the left of centre has been completely replaced by a pier made of 20th-century concrete blocks. The roof is gable-ended, and the rear wall is original, featuring a tall doorway that now has a 19th-century solid frame and contemporary double doors.
Inside, the barn is open from the ground to the roof, which consists of four bays supported by side-pegged jointed cruck trusses, with the western truss being partly rebuilt.
