Description
144 and 144A High Street is a shop with accommodation above, likely built in the mid to late 18th century. The building is roughcast with a slate roof, a brick stack on the left side, and a cast iron gutter. It has a very small double depth plan, being one room wide. The exterior consists of three storeys with a one-bay front. The deep eaves are supported by paired moulded brackets, with a timber moulding below, which matches the adjoining No. 143 on the left, although the rooflines of the two houses differ. The first floor features a 16-pane sash window with a probable 18th-century flush frame, while the second floor has a 4/8-pane similar sash window, both containing some old glass. The ground floor has a simple 20th-century plate glass shop window with a 20th-century door to the left. The interior was only inspected on the ground floor, which has a chamfered axial beam in the front room. Other interesting features may exist in the upper floors.
