Description

Lowerfield House is probably an 18th-century house located in Lapford. It is constructed of plastered cob and rubble, with rubble stacks incorporating 18th or 19th century brick chimney shafts, and has a slate roof. The house has a 3-room plan, facing south, with an entrance hall and staircase positioned to the right (east) of centre. Projecting end stacks are present to both end rooms, and a rear lateral stack to the central room.

The front elevation has a balanced, though asymmetrical, 5-window arrangement. A doorway is located to the right of centre, featuring a late 18th- to early 19th-century 6-panel door, partly glazed, with panelled reveals, a fluted doorcase, and a flat-roofed Tuscan porch. The porch is supported by turned granite columns and a moulded entablature. Flanking the doorway are curving bay windows, fitted with forward 16-pane sashes and 8-pane side sashes. Other windows contain late 19th-century casements incorporating glazing bars, and feature a substantial quantity of old glass. The building possesses a coved plaster eaves cornice. The roof is hipped at each end and is accentuated by tall brick chimney shafts.

The interior retains some original plasterwork and joinery.
