Description
The former forage barn, also known as Building 6 at Higher Barracks, was constructed in 1794 for the Barrack Department. This building, now used as a store, is made of brick with a weatherboarded front and features a slate pyramidal roof. It has a square, single-depth plan and stands two storeys high with a one-window front range. The weatherboarded front and brick sides include 20th-century central vehicle doors and a small casement window to the right of the right-hand door. The right-hand return has both ground and first-floor windows, with the upper window featuring a 19th-century metal frame. Inside, the barn has a heavy roof supported by king post trusses and a wide right-hand side stair with an uncut string. Historically, forage barns were essential parts of cavalry barracks, and this example is one of the least altered from the first army barrack-building campaign in England, established at the beginning of the Revolutionary War with France. The only other known examples, which are more altered, are located at Hounslow Barracks in Greater London.
