Description

The Gateway to Devon County Prison is a Grade II listed structure located on New North Road. It was built in 1853 by architect John Hayward on the site of an earlier "Bridewell" prison established in 1810. The central gateway, which is heavily rusticated and features vermiculated stone, is a remnant of the earlier prison and was designed by architect George Moneypenny. The design of the gateway was inspired by the side doors at Burlington House in London.
