Description

The Castle, now Crown Court, was built in 1774. The main front is constructed of stone and is two storeys high with nine windows. The ground floor is rusticated, featuring round-headed openings, with the central three being arches leading to an open portico. The central portion of the front projects forward and incorporates a pediment three windows wide. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars. The rear elevation is brick, with projecting wings on each side. An east wing, dating to 1905, is similar in style to the main block and features four bays. The third bay breaks forward, displaying Venetian windows on the upper floor, surmounted by a dentil pediment. The windows are arched sashes with glazing bars. The building is topped with a slate roof and a cupola. A modern west wing is constructed of red stone. The listed buildings along Castle Street are considered a group.
