Description
Rougemont House, located on Castle Street, was constructed around 1720 on the site of old fortifications by John Patch, a surgeon from Exeter. The house itself dates from the early 19th century. The principal front faces northwest and features three storeys of stucco. The ground floor has two segmental bows, and the flat roofs of these bows create a balcony with a bowed iron balustrade and canopy. On the southeast side, there are two angle bows. The house includes a Tuscan porch with round-headed windows above. Sash windows with glazing bars and architrave surrounds are present, along with a band at the first-floor level. A cornice and parapet are also part of the design, while the roof is not visible. Outside the house, there are some 17th and 18th-century lead cisterns, brought from elsewhere, including one dated 1724 and another from 1767. All the listed buildings in Castle Street are part of a group.
