Description

The Goat Walk and Wall is a structure built in 1846 by Francis Davy, a shipbuilder, with a raised pavement added in 1910-11. It is constructed from local grey limestone rubble and features semi-circular stone coping, while the pavement surface is made of later 20th-century concrete. The wall stretches about 260 meters long at the high water level of the beach. In 1910, the Board of Trade approved an application to build the raised pavement to provide access across the beach at high water. At this time, the wall was also raised, varying in height, and includes a gateway with square piers topped with caps, a lintel, and an iron gate.
