Description

The former railway station building, now used as a house and offices, dates from 1860 and was designed by Tite for the Exeter-Exmouth line of the London and South Western Railway. The building features painted brickwork, with asbestos cement slate on the main structure and slate on the lower wing.

The main building has a compact gabled shape and is topped with very large chimney stacks. The lower wing, located at the south end, is now in separate ownership and has a gabled outer end. The railway-facing side of the building includes a low block with a high coped gable on the left, which has a small vent at the top. The long front features a 1:2:1-light canted bay, a 4-pane sash window, a broad 4-centred opening that is now glazed, and a 2-light mullioned casement.

To the right, the principal two-storey building has a coped gable with a recessed plain shield above a 2-light window on the first floor and a 3-light window on the ground floor. The low block has two tall brick stacks, while the main building has two broad eaves stacks on the right. Beyond the gable, there is a stepped-down wall with a blocked opening.

The road-facing front includes a narrow gable wing on the left, which has a large 2-light window and three single lights on the left return. The main front features a 2-light and a 3-light casement on the first floor, an obstructed 3-light window in the slightly set-back wing, and a small 2-light square bay with a hipped roof. The door, located to the left, is set within a timber-framed gabled porch and has a 4-centre head. The low wing on the right has three 2-light windows and a 4-centred opening with a pair of doors and a light above. The windows generally have flush set chamfered mullions.

This neat little design is situated approximately 35 meters from the surviving signal box.
