Description
The signal box, built around 1870 for the Exeter-Exmouth line, is a modified type 1 design by the London and South Western Railway. It also serves the level crossing gates. The lower half of the structure features English bond brickwork, while the upper half is covered with horizontal boarding. The roof is hipped and made of Welsh slate with lead dressings.
On the side facing the railway, there is a plain brick base with a continuous window above, which consists of all paned wood. The two outer sections are horizontal sash windows, and the center section is fixed, with a small vent in the roof slope. The return to Station Road has a 9:9:6-pane fixed window. The left return features a central door that is accessed by a wooden stair and a protective wooden porch, flanked by fixed lights.
At the back, there is a central eaves stack externally, with small lights in the brickwork below a 6-pane window to the left, and horizontal boarding. The original Stevens lever frame is still in place. The signal box is grouped with the station building located about 35 meters to the south.
