Description
The Manor House, also known at one time as Alphington House, is a 18th-century building located on Cowick Lane. This two-storey house features seven windows and has a stucco front that was unattractively altered around 1840. The ground floor is partly rusticated, and the central parapet has been raised. Above the sash windows, the window openings have panels with incised ornament. A notable feature is the good late 18th-century pedimented porch, which has been relocated from the center of the building. The sash windows include glazing bars, and the slate roof has two dormers. Inside, one ground floor room boasts an 18th-century Rococo ceiling, and there are two "Adam" fireplaces along with fitted cupboards of a similar period in two bedrooms. The house is historically linked to Mr. Wells, who was known for "breaking the bank at Monte Carlo."
