Description

The Higher Market Civic Hall, located at 1 Queen Street, was originally designed by George Dymond and completed by Charles Fowler in 1838. This building features a long front made of Bath stone, with a central Greek Doric portico that includes a pediment. There are two smaller porticos, one of which on the right side leads to the Civic Hall. The shop fronts on Queen Street were added later in the 19th century. The Goldsmith Street side has a simpler facade with a pediment and portico supported by unfluted Doric columns. Inside the main hall, there is a segmental ceiling, a clerestory, and granite piers along the aisles. The buildings numbered 2 to 14 Queen Street form a cohesive group with this structure.
