Description

Buckley Hill Cottage is a detached cottage, originally two cottages with an outhouse, dating from at least the 17th century. The building is of rendered and whitewashed construction with a weatherboarded eastern gable, a thatched roof, and brick stacks. The ground floor comprises four rooms aligned east-west, with a modern north-facing projection containing the staircase.

The cottage is two storeys high, featuring a curved south façade which faces the street, and an irregular north elevation overlooking the garden. The west elevation contains an inserted canted bay to the south and a doorway within a modern extension to the north. The interior ground floor includes an inglenook fireplace in the sitting room and a 19th-century style fireplace in the living room. The first floor has been modernised and is arranged at different levels.

Buckley Hill Cottage likely dates to the 17th century or possibly earlier. It is shown on the 1889 Ordnance Survey map occupying a larger footprint, extending further east and divided into two properties. A stone rubble outhouse, originally attached to the east side, was demolished in the 1970s.

The cottage is designated at Grade II for its continued representation of vernacular building traditions and because it retains a significant proportion of historic fabric from the 17th century or potentially an earlier date.
