Description

FENITON SY 19 NW 7/72 Nos 1, 2 and 3 Parr Cottages - GV II

Row of 3 cottages, probably formerly 4 cottages. Mid - late C19 but probably 2 building phases. Plastered local stone rubble and brick; brick or stone rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; slate roof. Plan: row of 3 cottages facing south-west and numbering 1 - 3 from right to left (south-east to north-west). Since no internal inspection was available at the time of tnis survey it was not possible to determine which cottages were built first, or even the details of the cottage layouts. No 1 appears to occupy 2 former 1-room plan cottages with an axial stack between. Nos 2 and 3 appear to have always had 2-rooms plans. There is an axial stack between the rooms of Nos 2 and 3. All 3 cottages are 2 storeys with service outshots to rear. Exterior: irregular 4:4-window front. The left 4-window section have segmental arches over with sandstone voussoirs and projecting keystones. The casement windows also have segmental arch heads. The doorways of Nos 2 and 3 stand side by side in this section and they too have similar segmental arch heads. However the doors like the 2 front doors belonging to Nos 2 further right are C20 and they display a variety of types. The right 4-window section contains C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars. The roof is gable-ended to right and to left it abuts adjoining Thorn Cottage (q.v). Interiors: were not available for inspection at the time of this survey. Feniton is an attractive little village containing a good group of listed buildings.
