Description

Thorn Cottage is a house built in the early to mid-19th century, with some alterations made in the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed from plastered brick and local stone rubble, featuring brick stacks with 19th-century chimney shafts and a slate roof. The house has a double depth plan, facing south-west, with a front and back room heated by an end stack on either side of a central entrance hall and rear staircase. It stands two storeys tall. The left (north-west) end is built into the hillslope, suggesting it may have originally had two storeys with a basement, similar to the nearby contemporary house, Court Barton, but this may have been altered in the mid to late 19th century.

The exterior displays a symmetrical three-window front, predominantly featuring 19th-century elements, possibly from two construction phases. The outer bays have 16-pane sash windows, with the ground floor windows being shorter than those above. The central window on the second floor is a narrow 12-pane sash, while the window below it is a 16-pane sash, which may be blocking the original doorway. Below this is the central doorway, which features a mid to late 19th-century part-glazed six-panel door, topped with a contemporary flat hood supported by shaped timber brackets. The eaves are plain, but there is a 19th-century cast iron gutter with lion head mask joints. The roof is gable-ended on the right side and extends continuously over the adjoining Court Barton on the left. The interior was not inspected, but it is suspected to contain 19th-century joinery and other details. Feniton is a charming village that boasts a good collection of listed buildings.
