Description
This barn, located approximately 30 metres north of Moorpit Farmhouse, was built in 1846 by Sir Francis Drake. It features roughly-shaped blocks of flint arranged in courses, with Hamstone ashlar details and a slate roof. The barn is oriented to face south-south-east and includes opposing central doorways leading to the threshing floor. The front doorway is not full height and likely contains the original double doors. Above this doorway is a Hamstone plaque inscribed with "TTFE Drake, Bart, 1846." The roof has gable ends with shaped kneelers, coping, and ball finials on the gables. There is a hayloft loading hatch on the right (east) end. The interior has not been inspected. Sir Francis Drake was known as an improving landlord, and many of the farmhouses and farm buildings on his Yarcombe estate were rebuilt to a high standard in the mid-19th century. While there are several similar barns on the estate, this one is considered the best example.
