Description

Chaffhay Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 17th century, with a late 19th-century extension. It is constructed from plastered local stone rubble, possibly with cob, and features stone rubble stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick. The roof is thatched, except for the late 19th-century extension, which has a slate roof.

The farmhouse faces southeast, but only the rear was visible during the survey. It appears to have a three-room plan, with the left room being the late 19th-century extension. The original two-room house has gable-end stacks and is two storeys high, possibly with integral outshots at the rear.

At the rear, there is a doorway with a 20th-century door behind a contemporary porch towards the right end, leading into the late 19th-century extension. There are also two 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The rest of the rear is occupied by the outshots, and the roof is gable-ended, extending continuously over these outshots.

Although the interior was not inspected during the survey, it is reported to contain large beams and an open fireplace with a bread oven. Chaffhay Farmhouse appears to be an intriguing small 17th-century farmhouse, and a thorough internal investigation is recommended to understand the layout and assess the surviving features before any alterations are made.
