Description

An 18th-century barn and byre, with minor alterations in the late 19th century, stands approximately 9 metres north-west of Stantaway Farmhouse. The building is constructed with exposed red cob on local stone rubble footings, with some patching in 19th-century brick, and has a thatched roof. It is a single block facing into the farmyard. The left-hand half was originally a threshing barn, featuring opposing double doors leading to the threshing floor. The right-hand half was a cow byre with a hayloft above, possibly initially stables. A small byre has been added to the right end.

The barn section features full-height double doors flanked by short projecting midstrey walls. The 19th-century plank doors, one divided into flaps, open onto the threshing floor; a loading hatch is positioned high in the wall to the right of the doors. The byre section has a central front door flanked by unglazed windows, with a loading hatch above. This section has been extensively patched with brick, obscuring the original arrangement of two doorways and associated windows. The roof is hipped at each end, and extends over the secondary byre, which is set back.

Inside, a cob crosswall extends to eaves level, with boarded timber framing up to the apex, separating the barn and byre sections. The byre hayloft rests on likely 19th-century replacement, unchamfered crossbeams. The barn is open to the roof, which is original and spans six bays (three in each section). This roof is constructed with A-frame trusses featuring spiked and pegged lap-jointed collars and X-apexes. The barn and byre represent an unusual example of a traditional thatched Devon farmbuilding and contribute to the picturesque group of listed buildings along Otterton Fore Street, alongside other buildings forming the farmyard behind Stantaway Farmhouse.
