Description

The Church of St Michael is a small church built between 1888 and 1889 in the Arts and Crafts style. It is constructed from stone rubble with freestone dressings and features a tiled roof. The layout includes a nave and chancel combined, a south transept, a south-west porch, and a north vestry. A bellcote is situated over the west gable, supported by corbelled buttresses with pinnacles, short tented gablets, and a small spirelet. There is a stringcourse below the window cill level on a battered plinth, with lancet and grouped lancet windows. The church has battered buttresses with set offs, and a central buttress at the west end features a gablet between lancets, topped by a small oval window in the gable. A lean-to vestibule spans the west end, with a gabled porch on the south side.

Inside, the church has red and yellow brick with stone dressings, and a timber vaulted roof supported by arched braces on stone corbels. There is a three-bay arcade in the vestibule at the west end and a two-bay arcade in the south transept. A squint with cusped arches is also present. The church retains complete furnishings, including a timber chancel screen, a carved wooden reredos with relief based on Bartolommeo's "The Entombment," a pulpit, benches, and a font. St Michael's serves as a chapel of ease, built by Mrs Scarbrough in memory of her father, Admiral Impey.
