Description
The Mond dome at the Lockyer Observatory is an observatory dome built around 1932. It is made of reinforced concrete, cast in situ, and features a wide, fluted external plinth. The dome itself is made of aluminium and has narrow windows with concrete surrounds and cornices. There is an entrance extension that includes an ashlar surround to the doorway, along with a dedication inscription located below the cornice. The entrance has a metal door decorated with a circular astrological and lunar motif. This dome was donated by Sir Robert Mond to house a Zeiss anastigmat camera, which is used for research on the photographic survey of galactic clusters.
