Description
Rectory Cottage is a small estate house, likely built in the late 17th century or early 18th century. It features colourwashed rendered cob on stone footings and has a thatched roof with a plain ridge, hipped at the ends, and an axial stack. The layout consists of a single-depth, three-room plan, with the two left-hand rooms heated by back-to-back fireplaces in the axial stack, which is associated with a winder stair. The entrance faces the chimney-breast, leading into the kitchen on the left, a central parlour, and an unheated service room on the right.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front, which includes a 19th-century plank front door and a set of 19th-century two- and three-light small-pane casements. Inside, the left-hand fireplace features a chamfered lintel, and there is a chamfered axial beam in the centre room. The roof has not been inspected but may hold interest. Overall, Rectory Cottage is a very unspoiled example of a small vernacular house.
