Description
The walls to the vineyard, including gate piers and walls to the terraced beds, date from the 17th century or earlier. These flint rubble walls enclose the former vineyard, which is not exactly rectangular. Vineyard Cottage, which is separately listed, is located in the north-east corner. In the center, there are symmetrically arranged terraced beds, and there is a gateway in the east wall. The gate piers are made of handmade brick with ashlar quoins and moulded cornices, topped with obelisks on carved bases. This site is part of the garden at Combe House and is an extremely interesting survival. The vineyard is depicted on a survey plan from around 1787, which was reproduced in Christopher Hussey's articles on Combe in Country Life in June 1955. The gardens at Combe are listed as grade II on the Register of Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England.
