Description
Rapshayes Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the mid to late 17th century. It is constructed from rendered cob and stone and features a corrugated asbestos roof, which was formerly thatched. The roof is half-hipped at the left end and hipped at the right end, with an axial stack.
The building has a single depth plan that is three rooms wide, with a baffle entrance located to the right of the center against the stack. The two rooms on the right are heated by back-to-back fireplaces in the axial stack. The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with four windows. There is a re-used 19th-century half-glazed front door to the right of the center, and the windows are a mix of 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-light small pane timber casements from the 19th century.
Inside, the farmhouse remains unmodernized. The left-hand heated room features a chamfered stopped crossbeam, while the right-hand room has a boxed-in crossbeam. Both fireplaces are partially blocked, but earlier lintels and jambs are likely to be intact. A staircase rises from the right-hand room, which serves as the parlour, against the rear wall. The roof apex was not visible during the survey in 1988, but the principal rafters seen upstairs appear to be straight. Overall, this traditional house is unspoiled externally and may have interior features that are currently hidden by modern plaster.
