Description

Cannington Viaduct is a disused railway viaduct built around 1900. It is constructed of massed concrete and features ten elliptical arches supported by tall, slightly battered rectangular piers that have projecting blocks at the impost level. The viaduct has a concrete parapet with recessed panels and breaks over the piers. Notably, the westernmost arch has exposed brick, while the third arch from the west end has been reinforced with brick infilling that is also arched; this reinforcement is believed to have been done at the time of construction. The Axminster and Lyme Regis Light Railway, for which the viaduct was built, was authorized in 1899, constructed from 1900, and opened in 1903.
