Description
This is a former farmhouse dating back to around 1500, with later alterations and a 20th-century wing added to the right-hand side. The original structure was a three-room cross-passage plan, although it has been considerably modified over time. It is built of cob with a stone plinth, rendered, and covered by a gabled slate roof. The front of the house has a four-window range on the older section; five 2 and 4-light ground floor windows, and a doorway sheltered by a slate-roofed porch, located to the left of the blocked entrance to the former cross-passage. The upper windows are 2-light, with two positioned under separate gables that formerly had eyebrow eaves. An axial stack is located on the back of the house, positioned against the former passage. A rear stair turret is situated at the higher end of the main hall. Inside, the hall contains a large fireplace with a side oven, where the jambs have been renewed. A deeply chamfered beam and a bressumer above the fireplace likely indicate that the lower end of the house originally projected into the hall. Remnants of a screen remain, consisting of studs but without the original infill. The roof above the hall features three jointed cruck timbers, which are chamfered, morticed, and side-pegged at the apex and show signs of smoke-blackening.
