Description
The barn and adjoining linhay, located approximately 20 metres north-east of Stantaway Farmhouse, date from the mid to late 19th century. Constructed from stone rubble with red brick quoins, the building features a pantile roof and is L-shaped. The barn has a relatively short threshing area that faces south-east towards the farmyard and is connected to the right end of an earlier barn and shelter. At the left end of the barn, there are opposing doorways leading onto the threshing floor, and to the rear right, there is a horse-engine house, which may be a later addition as it partially obstructs the rear doorway.
The barn's front right end has a former linhay that projects at right angles, facing south-west into the farmyard. Only the doorway of the barn is visible from the farmyard, featuring 19th-century full-height double plank doors with coverstrips, one of which is split into flaps. The rear barn doors are identical. The barn roof is gable-ended on the left and hipped on the right. Originally, the linhay was open-fronted and consisted of 4 ½ bays with full-height posts (Alcock's linhay Type T1). It has since been converted into pigsties, with the lower section bricked up, now including two 20th-century doors and three windows, while the hayloft has been weather-boarded and features two loading hatches. The linhay is lower than the barn and has a gable-ended roof.
Inside, the barn has a three-bay king post truss roof, while the linhay boasts a seven-bay roof with identical trusses. The linhay includes a 20th-century feeding passage along the rear, likely an original feature, as the doorways at each end are original. This barn and linhay are part of a group with other farm buildings that enclose the farmyard behind Stantaway Farmhouse and contribute to the attractive collection of listed buildings along Otterton Fore Street.
