Description
The Hughes chest tomb, dated 1872, is located approximately 6 metres south-south-west of the tower of the Church of St Mary in Whimple. This chest tomb is constructed from bathstone ashlar and is designed in the Tudor Gothic style. It has a rectangular shape resting on a moulded plinth, with a lid that features moulded edges and a low pitched ridge. The corners are adorned with clasping pilasters that have trefoil-headed panels, while each side includes a Tudor arch panel. The north panel bears an inscription in Gothic lettering, commemorating the deaths of Mary Hughes in 1872 and her husband William, a general, in 1897.
