Description

The Carter headstone, located approximately 9 metres south-south-east of the tower of the Church of St Michael in Otterton, is a Grade II listed memorial dated 1773 in memory of Susanna Carter. Made of limestone, this upright slab stands about 500mm high and features a square top. The front of the headstone bows slightly forward and is framed with a moulded edge. At the top center, there is a winged cherub head depicted in low relief. The inscription begins with the word 'here' in ornate Gothic lettering, while the remainder is in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, commemorating the death of Susanna Carter in 1773.
