Description
The Carter Headstone, located approximately 3 meters south of the Church of St Mary, is a Grade II listed memorial dedicated to Reverend John Carter, a Catholic priest, and dates from 1803. It is made of ashlar stone and features a segmental head. The headstone is adorned with a Calvary cross at the top and includes a long inscription composed by Bishop Berrington, notable for its naive spacing of lines. This headstone is an unusual example of a memorial for a Catholic priest situated in an Anglican graveyard, reflecting the religious tolerance present in Wolverhampton.
