Description
The former stable block located 260 metres east of Killerton House, designed by John Johnson in 1778, is now used as a National Trust shop and ticket office. It is constructed from coursed rubble volcanic trap with ashlar dressings and features a slate hipped roof. The building has a quadrangular plan with two main entrances facing each other.
The front elevation includes five round-headed recessed bays, each with ashlar imposts and keyblocks. Each bay has a tympanum featuring a semi-circular window with radiating bars, while the arcade is otherwise blind. The central entrance is slightly projecting and round-headed, topped with a pediment that has a modillion cornice running along the entire front. At the center, there is an octagonal clock turret with a bellcote, supported by eight chamfered timber columns. The clock and bell are intact, although the weather vane may be missing. The internal faces of the main entrances also feature pediments.
On the right-hand side, there is a third entrance, which is a simple round-headed arch with a brick soffit. The rear of the front range has a blind arcade with four bays, while the internal face of the rear range features two large round-headed carriage doors flanking a central archway. The rear elevation is quite plain. Additionally, a two-storey cottage has been inserted into part of the right-hand range. The clock is noted for its attractive cast iron frame, as mentioned by John Scott.
