Description
Nos. 39 to 43 Church Street are a group of cottages, originally dating from the 17th century, with Nos. 39 and 41 likely being of the 18th century or possibly earlier. Nos. 42 and 43 were originally single cottages, but were heightened in the early 19th century.
Nos. 39 and 41 are two-storey cottages constructed of cob. They have thatched roofs, with the eaves line following the fall in the ground. The windows are mostly renewed wooden casements, except on No. 41, where they are new, and No. 41 also has a new door and tent hood. The entrance to No. 39 is at the rear. To the right of No. 41 is a full-width carriageway with old double doors and weatherboarding above.
Nos. 42 and 43 have steep-pitched gable ends with slate roofs. The windows of No. 42 are renewed casements, while No. 43 retains older two-light casements. The door of No. 42 is of six flush panels with a new tent hood, and the door of No. 43 has four flush panels and two glazed panes.
