Description

Glen Eden is a cottage, originally two cottages, dating from the early to mid-17th century, with significant rebuilding and enlargement in the late 19th century. The construction uses a mix of plastered local stone and flint rubble, possibly incorporating cob, with stone rubble stacks and plastered brick chimney shafts. The main house has a thatched roof, while an extension has a slate roof.

The cottage originally comprised a three-room plan, facing south. The central and right (east) rooms form the original cottage, with a later 19th-century extension to the left (west). This extension is slightly set back. The right room has a gable-end stack, the centre room has an axial stack backing onto the extension, and the extension has a disused rear lateral stack. Only the right room retains features indicative of the cottage’s origins in the early to mid-17th century. The cottage stands two storeys high.

The front façade is symmetrical to the central doorway, which has a contemporary gabled slate-roofed porch and a 20th-century door. It has a 1:2-window arrangement of 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars, with all three first-floor windows rising into the eaves. The main roof is gable-ended.

The interior of only the right room preserves early to mid-17th century features, including a chamfered crossbeam with run-out stops and a stone rubble fireplace containing one Beerstone ashlar cheek and a plain oak lintel, plus an oven. The centre room's fireplace is built of 19th-century brick, and other interior carpentry is plain and dates to the 19th century, including an A-frame truss roof.

Glen Eden forms a group with the nearby Church of St Mary Magdalene.
