Description

Netherexe Parish Church, with an unknown dedication, is a parish church dating from the late 15th century. It underwent restoration in 1890, and the roof was replaced in 1906 by Chancellor & Son of Chelmsford. The church is constructed of coursed rubble and features a nave and chancel that are combined, a south porch, and a 19th-century north vestry located opposite the porch. Both the north and south walls are similar, with three heavy buttresses that have plinths and two set-offs, and each wall contains two square-headed windows. The south door and porch entrance both have chamfer and hollow moulding, along with moulded bases. The east window, framed between two buttresses that leave the angles clear, is a three-light Perpendicular style window with very weathered faces as hood-mould terminals, and it may have been reset. The west end features a square bellcote with a bell, a two-light west window in the Perpendicular style with a quatrefoil in the head, and a west doorway that is identical to the others. The upper courses of the wall were particularly rebuilt in 1906.

Inside, there is a Norman font with a square bowl that has a scalloped underside, a circular shaft, and a square base with a scalloped top. There is also a trefoil-headed piscina in the south sanctuary wall and a tall, elongated blocked doorway to the east of the present entrance. The deep window recesses have chamfered rear arches. The roof, installed in 1906, features open rafters, collars, studs, a moulded wall-plate, and three crenellated tie beams. A notable monument inside is dedicated to Mary Young, who died in 1771; it features a cartouche with putti heads and a heraldic device, surmounted by an obelisk made of marble. Although Devon has many late 15th-century churches, complete small chapels from this period are rare. Netherexe church stands alone in a field but was formerly associated with a nearby manor house that is no longer present.
