Description
Ladram Cottage is an early 19th-century cottage with a late 19th to early 20th-century extension. The walls are mostly stone rubble with some cob near the tops and brick dressings, while the chimney stacks are made of brick with plastered shafts. The roof is thatched. This T-shaped cottage faces southwest and is situated on a terrace in a steep valley. It features a two-room plan with a central entrance hall and an axial stack positioned to the right of center. The end corners of the cottage are canted, creating pointed ends, and the middle section of the front is set back behind a verandah. There is a one-room plan service extension that projects at right angles from the rear center. The nearly symmetrical front has a central set-back area with a plank door featuring cover strips in a pointed archway, flanked by arch-headed windows. Each window contains a casement with glazing bars and a head with simply-cusped Y-tracery. The full-width bays on either side contain additional arch-headed doorways, although the one on the right is a 20th-century replacement. The roof over the central recess is supported by a colonnade of four rustic timber posts with plain abacus blocks, resting on crude sandstone pads, and the roof is hipped at both ends. The right end features a round-headed window with a casement and radial glazing bars, along with a plain casement with glazing bars in the right end front canted wall. The interior has not been inspected. This cottage is a distinctive example of cottage ornee.
