Description

Anchoring Cottage is an 18th-century cottage, refurbished in the late 19th century. It is located on Otterton Road, Otterton. The cottage is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with some stone rubble and brick patching. The stacks are of stone rubble or cob, topped with 19th-century brick, and the roof is thatched. The cottage has a two-room plan and faces south-south-west. The left section is terraced into a hillside, and the left room is larger than the right. A staircase between the rooms appears to have blocked a former through passage. Each room has a gable-end stack. The front is a regular, although not symmetrical, four-window arrangement featuring late 19th and 20th-century replacement casement windows with glazing bars. A 20th-century plank door is located in the doorway to the right of centre, and the window above it is blind. The roof is gable-ended. Some rear windows have 19th-century brick arches above them. The interior is largely a result of late 19th-century modernisation. The left room retains an 18th-century crossbeam with neat soffit chamfers. Both fireplaces are blocked by 19th-century chimneypieces. Most of the joinery is from the 19th century, though a couple of doors are 18th-century and hung on H-hinges. The roof was not inspected.
