Description
This description is for a pair of gate piers and gates located about 600 metres west of Shute Barton, dating from the late 18th century, around the time when Shute House was built between 1787 and 1790 for Sir John Pole. The gate piers are made of limestone ashlar and knapped flint, featuring a square plan with plinths and five small panels of knapped flint on each side. They have large moulded cornices and ball-topped finials. On either side of the gateway, there are short sections of brick walls in Flemish bond that ramp up to the piers. The gates, which were added in the 19th century, are made of wrought iron and have arrow-heads at the top rail and intersecting braces below the mid rail. These gate piers mark the end of a former drive leading to Shute House.
