Description
The Church of St Michael is a parish church dating back to the 13th century, featuring a cruciform plan with a central tower, nave, chancel, and north and south transepts, which were enlarged in the 13th century. It includes a northeast chapel and a south porch, with a north aisle added in 1811. The church is constructed of stone rubble with freestone dressings and has slate roofs. The south side showcases 19th-century Perpendicular style windows with flat heads. The central crossing tower is unbuttressed and features battlements, gargoyles, and two-light Perpendicular bell-openings.
Inside, the crossing tower is supported by piers and arches from around the 14th century. The north arcade, added in 1811, consists of three bays, while the two-bay arcade leading to the northeast chapel has four-centred arches and houses a notable monument from around 1741. This monument features a statue of William Pole, dressed as the Master of the Household to Queen Anne, created by Sir Henry Cheere and set on a pedestal. There are also other early 19th-century monuments by Rouw of London.
The church contains a much restored 15th-century font with quatrefoil panels, and armorial glass in the north aisle dated 1673 and 1808. The interior features 19th-century wagon roofs and furnishings. In the churchyard, located immediately southwest of the church, there is a tomb chest dated 1665.
