Description
The Taylor Coldridge chest tomb, dated 1871, is located approximately 2.5 metres northwest of the Church of All Saints in East Budleigh. It commemorates Samuel Taylor Coldridge and is signed by Collings of Exmouth. This chest tomb is constructed from limestone with a granite base and is designed in the Gothic style.
The lid features a very low-pitched ridge, with moulded edges and a coved cornice adorned with four leaf decoration and rosettes. The moulded plinth wraps around the angle buttresses, which have weathered offsets. Each end of the tomb has one panel, while the sides have two panels each, separated by similar buttresses. The panels are sunken and contain a 4-centred arch with a cinquefoil head and trefoils in the spandrels. Most panels are inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. The west end notes the death of Samuel Taylor Coldridge in 1871, while the southern panels record the deaths of John and Elizabeth Coldridge in 1851. The tomb rests on a granite platform that shows a series of sockets, indicating that it was once enclosed by iron railings.
