Description

This is a cottage, likely dating back to the 17th century, but significantly rebuilt in the early 19th century. It is constructed with a plaster-covered cob exterior on stone rubble foundations, with stone rubble or cob footings topped with 20th-century brick. The roof is thatched. The cottage follows a two-room plan with a central entrance lobby and staircase facing onto the High Street to the west. The larger left room has a rear lateral stack. It is two stories high, with a front of late 19th and early 20th-century casement windows – three lights on the left and two lights on the right, both with glazing bars. A 20th-century part-glazed door is positioned between the windows, slightly right of centre. A few surviving stucco quoins are visible high up on the right end of the wall. The thatched roof continues with that of Philomel Cottage to the left and butts against the gable of The Old Bakery to the right. Inside, the ground-floor partitions and ceiling joists are 19th-century, and the original fireplace has been blocked by a 20th-century grate. The roof structure is obscured by partitions, though earlier features may be present, given the cottage was originally part of a pair with Philomel Cottage, which contains 17th-century features. The two cottages were probably created by dividing a larger 17th-century house in the early 19th century. Number 34 High Street is one of several attractive and historically significant buildings along the High Street, which rises towards the Church of All Saints.
