Description

These are a group of four porch cottages, originally a single porch house, located on Church Street in Sidford. While a date of 1574 is suggested, the building was significantly altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. A local legend claims that Charles II once slept here, though this is unsubstantiated.

The cottages are a two-story block. The front and sides are plastered and whitewashed, while the rear features a stone rubble wall. A dated tablet initially situated on a chimney bears the initials "NIE". The roof is thatched. The windows are largely 19th-century wood casements, with No. 3 featuring a four-light wood mullioned casement. At the rear, there are two oak mullioned casements and a small window cut from a single stone. The cottage doors are plain. Nos. 1 and 2 have small trellis porches to the side of their entrances. One ground floor room features a polygonal stone pier that supports the ceiling.
