Description

WHIMPLE SY 09 NW 5/198 Barnshayes Farmhouse - - II

Farmhouse. C16 or C17 origins, much rebuilt in the early - mid C19, thoroughly modernised circa 1970. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; stone rubble stacks with plastered chimney-shafts; thatch roof. Plan: farmhouse faces south-east. It has a 2-room plan with a stair in a narrow third cell at the left (south-west) end. Next to it is the lounge with rear lateral stack and kitchen at right end has an end stack. This farmhouse appears to be a C19 house but modernised circa 1970. However the farmer reports an oak arch-headed doorway was briefly exposed circa 1970. Also the stairs are in an odd position. It could be that they occupy the site of a C16 or C17 through-passage and that the rooms occupy the former hall and inner room. 2 storeys. Exterior: symmetrical 3-window front of C20 casements with glazing bars. Doorway is to rear into the kitchen and it contains a C20 door. Roof is tall and steeply pitched. It is hipped both ends. Interior: is wholly the result of a thorough circa 1970 modernisation. No carpentry is exposed and the fireplaces are blocked. The arch-headed doorway was discovered in the wall between the lounge and stair hall. Roof of C19 tie beam trusses with spiked lap-jointed collars.
