Description
Barnshayes Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 16th or 17th century, although it was largely rebuilt in the early to mid-19th century and thoroughly modernised around 1970. The building features plastered cob on stone rubble footings, stone rubble stacks with plastered chimney-shafts, and a thatched roof. The farmhouse faces southeast and has a two-room plan with a staircase located in a narrow third cell at the left (southwest) end. Adjacent to the staircase is the lounge, which has a rear lateral stack, while the kitchen at the right end features an end stack. Although the farmhouse appears to be a 19th-century structure, the farmer noted that an oak arch-headed doorway was briefly exposed around 1970. The staircase's unusual position suggests it may occupy the site of a 16th or 17th-century through-passage, with the rooms representing the former hall and inner room. The building has two storeys and a symmetrical three-window front featuring 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The doorway leading into the kitchen is located at the rear and contains a 20th-century door. The roof is tall, steeply pitched, and hipped at both ends. The interior has been completely modernised as a result of the 1970 renovations, with no exposed carpentry and blocked fireplaces. The previously mentioned arch-headed doorway was found in the wall between the lounge and the stair hall. The roof structure consists of 19th-century tie beam trusses with spiked lap-jointed collars.
