Description

The Cottage and Umbrella Cottage date from circa 1805, with earlier origins as a row of cottages. The building was reconfigured around 1805 with the addition of a south-east wing. The exterior is roughcast, with a thatched hipped roof. It is two storeys high. The original five-window front features eyebrow eaves over the first-floor windows, and three-light casement windows with gothic glazing. A former porch, now removed, had a lead roof shaped like an umbrella, giving the building one of its names. The 1805 south-east wing creates an L-shaped plan. The building stands elevated above the road, incorporating a blind retaining wall with two pointed arch recesses and an iron balustrade above. The south side of the wing is supported by rustic wooden posts and features a hipped thatched roof. A tented verandah and an elaborate gothic French window are on the west side. On the east side, facing the road, is a semi-circular thatched porch supported by reeded columns.
